掃羅看見並知道耶和華與大衛同在，而且自己的女兒米甲也愛大衛，

大衛在他一切的道路上都通達，因為耶和華與他同在。

大衛王也從哈大底謝的城——比塔城和比羅塔城中，奪走極多的銅。

大衛在大馬士革的亞蘭地設立駐軍，這樣亞蘭就臣服於大衛，向他進貢。大衛無論往哪裡去，耶和華都使他得勝。

非利士人與以色列人爭戰，以色列人從非利士人面前逃跑，被殺的人倒在基利波山上。非利士人追上掃羅和他的兒子們，殺死了掃羅的兒子約拿單、亞比拿達和麥基舒亞。掃羅遭到猛烈的攻擊，弓箭手射中了他，他受到射手的重創。掃羅對替他拿兵器的說：「拔出你的刀來，把我刺死！免得這些未受割禮的人來刺死我，折辱我。」但拿兵器的不肯，因為他極其害怕。於是掃羅拿起刀，伏在刀上。替他拿兵器的看見掃羅死了，也伏在自己的刀上，隨掃羅一起死了。這樣，掃羅和他三個兒子，以及替他拿兵器的人，還有他所有的部下，都在那天一同死了。

大衛在鹽谷擊殺一萬八千以東人回來，名聲大振。大衛在以東設立了駐軍；他在全以東設立駐軍，全以東就臣服於大衛。大衛無論往哪裡去，耶和華都使他得勝。

大衛在耶和華解救他脫離一切仇敵和掃羅之手的日子，向耶和華吟誦了這首歌的歌詞。

萬軍之耶和華與我們同在，雅各的神是我們的庇護所。細拉

我追趕我的仇敵，並要除滅他們；不滅絕他們，我絕不返回。我滅絕他們，擊碎他們，使他們不能起來；他們都仆倒在我的腳下。你以能力裝備我作戰，又使起來敵對我的人屈服在我之下。你使我的仇敵在我面前轉身而逃，我把那些恨我的人除盡。

大衛又說：「我指著耶和華的永生起誓：一定是耶和華來擊打他——或是到了所定的日子而死，或是出戰陣亡；

他把權能者從高位上拉下，又把卑微的人高舉。
