But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.And David said to Abiathar,“ I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father’s house.Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”

And to Abiathar the priest the king said,“ Go to Anathoth, to your estate, for you deserve death. But I will not at this time put you to death, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before David my father, and because you shared in all my father’s affliction.”

Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

Go back to the city in peace, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there.
