亞瑪謝召集猶大人，按著猶大和便雅憫宗族設立千夫長和百夫長，並數點二十歲以上、能使用盾牌矛槍且有作戰能力的精兵，共有三十萬人。

甲薛人耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅是位勇士，做過非凡的事。他曾殺死摩押的兩個勇猛戰士，也曾在下雪天跳進坑中殺死一頭獅子，

要救自己脫離困境，像羚羊掙脫獵人的手，飛鳥逃脫捕鳥人的手。

那時大衛留守在堡壘裡，非利士人的駐軍在伯利恆。

我的良人啊，願你像香草山上的羚羊和小鹿，快快來到我身邊！

大衛住在曠野的堡壘或西弗曠野的山區。掃羅天天搜捕大衛，但上帝沒有把大衛交在他的手中。

大衛便向掃羅起誓。之後，掃羅回家了，大衛和部下也回堡壘去了。
