The Pharisees and Sadducees approached,16:1–12 Mt 12:38–39; Mk 8:11–21; Lk 12:54–56 and tested him, asking him to show them a sign from heaven.16:1 Lk 11:16; 1Co 1:22
He replied, “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be good weather because the sky is red.’
And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You16:3 Other mss read Hypocrites! Youknow how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.16:2–3 Other mss omit When (v. 2) through end of v. 3
An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of16:4 Other mss add the prophetJonah.”16:4 Mt 4:13; 21:17; Lk 11:29 Then he left them and went away.
The disciples reached the other shore,16:5 Lit disciples went to the other side and they had forgotten to take bread.
Then Jesus told them, “Watch out and beware of the leaven16:6 Or yeast, also in vv. 11,12of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”16:6 Mt 3:7; 8:15; Lk 12:1; 1Co 5:6–8; Gl 5:9
They were discussing among themselves, “We didn’t bring any bread.”
Aware of this, Jesus said, “You of little faith,16:8 Mt 6:30; 8:26; 14:31; Lk 12:28why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread?
Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you collected?
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many large baskets you collected?16:9–10 Mt 14:17–21; 15:34–38
Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread?”16:11 Mt 3:7; 16:6; Mk 8:15; Lk 12:1
Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.16:12 Mt 5:20; 17:13; 23:3

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,16:18 Mt 18:17; Ac 5:11; 7:38; 8:1,3; 9:31; 11:22,26and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,16:19 Is 22:22; Mt 18:18; Jn 20:23; Rv 1:18; 3:7and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound16:19 Or earth will be boundin heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed16:19 Or earth will be loosedin heaven.”

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.16:25 Mt 10:39; Jn 12:25
